UN peacekeeping role for Japan

Posted on 04 February 2004 by Andy

Hot on the heels of the arrival of the first Japanese troops in Iraq, comes the news that Japan has formally registered with the UN as a potential provider of troops for UN missions.

It will be interesting to see whether the Japanese government will try to shape the domestic debate about sending troops abroad by getting seriously involved in peace missions, and saying ‘look what a positive impact our troops can have,’ or whether this will remain a move in paper only.
