Pravda.ru has gone into paranoia overdrive with its latest article ‘USA to intervene Siberia?’ The Wall Street Journal has apparently been showing a suspicious interest in Elizaveta Sigiletova, who is one of the last people able to speak Khant.
The Tomsk University linguists working on restoring the Khant language, are depicted as enthusiasts. The US leading media outlet for business is unlikely to write about enthusiasts. The interest of Americans to Khants in Siberian taiga looks suspicious.
This apparently means that Siberia is to become the latest Panama. ‘Huh? What’s Panama, which is nice and warm, got to do with Siberia, which is… bloody cold?’ you ask. Well, read on, and judge for yourselves…
Today oil-bearing Siberia can become in the role of Panama. The article in the Wall Street Journal is just the first attempt. By starting the fight for the rights of Khants oppressed by Russians, control over Siberian oil can be obtained. And this, one should expect no mercy. Americans are excited with the way of life of the relic tribes living in nomad”s tents, and irritated with Russians who brought civilization in the area. It looks like Americans are preparing new Panama in Siberia.
Okaaaaaaay.
Note: I honestly thought this was an April fools day joke. But it was published on the 2nd, I swear. Even the original Russian version came out on the 2nd. Whatever. If I got caught out and look dumb, I’ll live. It’s just too funny not to tell you about.

Since pravda.ru is Western-oriented and not read in Russia, it doesn’t really matter what conspiracy theories they spew.

Pravda seemed pretty widely available and widely read in Russia when I was there. It struck me as being very similar in tone to some of the tabloids we get over in the UK. Very few people take what it says seriously but it’s a fun read nonetheless.

I love Pravda. It’s getting nearly as good as the Weekly World News.
