In the wake of the spate of hostage-takings in Iraq over the last week or so the Russian government decided to lay on free flights home (at a cost of $500,000) to any Russian or CIS civilian workers who wanted to leave.
However, many have decided to stay, including almost all of the 365 staff working for Interenergoservis, and eight staff who were previously taken hostage.
All Russians who chose to stay have filed statements that they have been warned about the dangers of staying in Iraq but have decided voluntarily not to leave the country, the diplomatic source told Interfax.
I’d imagine they were under a lot of pressure to stay. Those who left would probably have had their contracts terminated. And I bet Interenergoservis pays well - certainly better than most equivalent jobs in Russia.
