Russians in Iraq

by Andy on November 17, 2004

This is an interesting one from Mosnews: Russia agrees to send troops to Iraq.

Russia has agreed to send a small number of troops to Iraq to protect oil wells and support the U.S.-led military campaign there, an aide in the Bush administration has said.

The Russian Kommersant-Vlast magazine spoke with the aide on conditions of anonymity, and he said that he had heard the information at a recent meeting in the White House.

If true, it would be a stunning coup for Bush.  However, Mosnews is so far the only English language news-site carrying the story.  Treat with caution.

Update:  Via The Agonist, I see that rumours of Russia sending up to 40,000 (!) troops to Iraq were also flying around in July.

Update 2: See my two later posts for further details on this story.
