Yavlinsky to be Ukraine PM?

by Andy on January 18, 2005

Mosnews reports a rumour that Grigory Yavlinsky may become the next Prime Minister of Ukraine.  Well, whats so unusual about that, you ask?  Well, because, despite his Ukrainian roots, he’s the leader of Yabloko, a liberal Russian party.

The paper [Russky Kurier] claims that the Yabloko leader may also be offered a post of an advisor to the Ukrainian president. In making such a proposal to a foreign politician with Ukrainian roots, Yushchenko would follow the example of Mikhail Saakashvili, who enlisted the services of Kakha Bendukidze, a Russian businessman and ethnic Georgian, and who was appointed Economics Minister of Georgia in June of 2004.

The paper did not rule out that namely Saakashvili had suggested Yavlinsky to Yushchenko.

Yabloko’s Press Secretary hotly denied the reports of course…

“These are entirely fabricated reports. Incorrect facts are accompanied by personal reflections of the author, whose real name is concealed by a pseudonym,” the Interfax news agency cited Dillendorf as saying.

I doubt he really will be offered the job but, frankly, he may as well take the it if he gets the chance.  The only way a liberal party is going to put together a credible electoral challenge in Russia is under a drastically different leadership.  Yavlinsky certainly isn’t the man for the job so, if he wants a taste of power he is going to have to look for it outside of Russia.

Considering that Yavlinsky grew up in L’vov/L’viv/Lwów, he might even be eligible for Ukrainian citizenship.
