Russia’s Oscars

Russia held its Golden Eagle -its version of the Oscars - Awards the other night, and Laurence Jarvik lay in bed watching so you didn’t have to.

Mostly it was as dull as the Oscars:

Like the Oscars, the seemingly endless Golden Eagle show ran way past midnight and had a lot of ads. It wasn’t as tacky as Hollywood, and not as exciting–considering the Oscars are boring to begin with.

But movie megastar Francis Ford Coppolla livened up the evening when he was eventually called to the stage to collect his award:

Francis buttoned his jacket, straightened his coat, and proceeded to the stage. He was wearing a bow tie, which was a nice touch. Then he gave a short speech in which he got his good friend Nikita Mihalov’s name wrong (the translator fixed it), paid tribute to the Soviet Union as well as Russia, and personally thanked Vladimir Putin (the translator skipped those items, just saying thank you to the Russian Academy).
