Following yesterdays announcement that the 2004-5 NHL season has been cancelled, Russia looks set to be the place to watch ice-hockey this year:
New York Islanders center Alexei Yashin became the latest player to head to Russia, signing with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl on Monday. Last week, Dany Heatley of the Atlanta Thrashers signed with Ak Bars Kazan of the Russian Superleague.
Ak Bars had already signed Ilya Kovalchuk of the Thrashers and three members of the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning — goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin and centers Vincent Lecavalier and Brad Richards. Right wing Jaromir Jagr of the New York Rangers is already playing for Avangard Omsk.
