Moscow Graffiti Blog

by Andy on March 22, 2005

Cimg3787 Lyndon, the man behind Scraps of Moscow, provides today’s pictures.  His new blog covers Moscow Graffiti in all its forms:

Mainly this phenomenon interests me because it seems relatively new. Of course, there have always been people writing things on walls here as anywhere else, even in Soviet times, but only in the past year (or really more like the past six months) have tags started to crop up with substantial density on the walls of buildings (not just in courtyards, either - often on the street side) in downtown Moscow.

Stencil Graffiti - the caption reads "I didn’t go to work today… I don’t think I’ll go tomorrow".

Cimg3728_2 3 condom shaped bunnies.

Hmmm… that did some very strange things to the formatting.  The last two pictures were supposed to line up neatly on the left.  I obviously don’t understand pictures on typepad.

Andy,

Thanks for checking out the new blog. Hopefully others will find it interesting and, it will turn out I’m not the only person who is fascinated by the graffiti culture which has developed in Moscow. I should note, by the way, that the stencil graffiti photo you posted is actually from St. Petersburg. That one was my favorite, too.

I didn’t consider the bunnies’ resemblance to rubbers - that’s an interesting thought, though.

Thanks for all of the material on the Kyrgyzstan situation - you and Nathan are keeping everyone (well, me anyway) informed, it seems. Looks like the situation down there is getting interesting. I heard a report about it on NPR this evening (listening over the internet), so it is finally getting coverage in the wider world as well.

The stencil graffitti reminds me of Buenos Aires. I saw that everywhere down there, especially in Palermo Viejo.
