The verdict in Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s trial for fraud and tax evasion has been postponed until May 16th. No explanation was given, just a written notice posted on the door of the courthouse. The Khodorkovsky defence team hadn’t been informed of the delay, and still plan to turn up at court today at 12:00.
Sadly, I think the delay has more to do with a desire to delay a politically embarrassing decision until after US President George W Bush’s visit to Moscow on May 9th than a desire to carefully weigh the facts of the case. The cynic in me also thinks that this delay indicates that Putin plans no concessions to Bush, and that Khodorkovsky is therefore unlikely to receive a particularly lenient sentence.

There is a lot more going on here than we will ever know.
