First it was McDonalds, then Starbucks, now Kentucky Fried Chicken are set to become the latest foreign food giant to invade mother Russia.
Yum! foods, who own the KFC brand, have signed a deal with Russian fried chicken chain Rostik, who currently run 80 restaurants scattered across the country:
Under the deal, the Rostik’s logo — a chicken holding a knife and fork — and the chain’s menu will be modified to include elements of the KFC brand. In addition to the use of its brand, Yum! is putting up a loan of $30 million in financial support. It will also assume responsibility for strategic planning, while Rostik Restaurants will retain operational management of the restaurants.
In 2010, Yum! has an option to buy Rostik out of the joint business or extend the current arrangement.

Ever heard of the guy who owns Rostik’s? His name is Rostislav Ordovsky-Tanaevsky Blanco. A Venezuelan of Russian ancestry.

No, I didn’t know of him. Did he come back to Russia in the early 1990s?
I don’t think Rostik’s actually had any outlets in Irkutsk while I was there, although I may be wrong. MacSibFood was my local fast food joint.

I think he came “back” — although for him it was probably his first visit — in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Rostislav also owns or co-owns a few other restaurants and franchizing licenses. His company (Rosinter) operates TGI Friday’s, Planet Sushi, Il Patio, etc.
