The BBC reports that the treatment of HIV positive people in Russia, particularly women and children, doesn’t seem to be getting any better. Shockingly, much of the most unsettling discrimination against those with HIV is encountered when they come into contact with the medical system.
Children born to HIV-positive women are often segregated in Russia for no medical reason, the rights group says.
According to official figures cited in the report, nearly 10,000 HIV-positive Russian women have given birth since 1997. Up to 20% abandoned their babies.
[…]HIV-positive women interviewed by the group’s researchers reported being verbally abused by doctors and nurses, or even being denied treatment altogether.
The BBC’s report is based on a Human Rights Watch document, but I can’t find the original on their website. I’ll try to post an updated link if I find it.
