The red menace returns to Georgia

Posted on 19 July 2005 by Andy

Authorities in Georgia have launched a crackdown on those most vile of criminals - illegal tomato growers.  The unidentified horticulturalists are becoming increasingly bold in their attempts to humiliate the Georgian government, forcing officials to take ever more extreme measures, Mosnews reports:

14 tomato bushes were found on Tuesday in gardens near the Georgian parliament building in Tbilisi.

Georgian authorities have destroyed the bushes on which the tomatoes had already started to mature. Each bush was tied to a wooden stake.

The bushes were found on a lawn where the Georgian president’s Dutch wife, Sandra Roelofs, planted tulips.

The authorities were quoted by RIA-Novosti news agency as saying they did not know how the tomatoes appeared on “the main lawn of the country.”
