Man arrested in Georgia after attempted grenade assasination

by Andy on July 21, 2005

Georgian police have arrested a man suspected of attempting to throw a grenade at US President George W Bush on his visit to Tbilisi earlier this year.  Gateway Pundit has a full report, including pictures of the arrested man.

Hovakim at Blogrel reports some concerns surrounding the arrest:

Late evening on July 20, the police went in to apprehend Arutyunov. Reports say he was involved in a shoot-out with cops, managed to kill one, and was himself shot. This is suspicious, of course. I hope he doesn’t ‘die’ in custody.

[…]He’s one Vova Arutyunov (according to BBC) or Vladimer Harutyunian (according to Civil Georgia). […]

It’s interesting the different readings of his last name. Is it possible that Civil Georgia manipulated the story to make his name more Armenian-sounding?

Onnik’s post at Oneworld Multimedia has more speculation on the suspect, including this explanation pulled by commenter Murthe:

Arutyunov is the Russified verion of Harutyunyan. You can see this in other surname’s as well, mostly of Armenians who have been living in Russia for a while. Some of them change their Armenian surnames to a more Russian sounding one. Elsewhere, this guy’s first name was mentioned as Vova, which is a shortened version of Vladimir.
