According to the Admiral in charge of Russia’s Pacific fleets the fishing nets (super secret underwater monitoring array?) that their mini-sub got caught on over the weekend were, in fact, laid by a group of poachers:
"Kamchatka poachers placed the fishing nets between mid-July and early August," he said.
The AS-28 went on mission in March. "The mission was paused for a storm and the Navy Day celebrations and that was when the fishing nets were placed in the restricted area," he said.
Now, I don’t mean to be overly critical, but… if these poachers in their rickety boats can sail the ocean quite happily, casting their nets far and wide, why did the pride of the Russian Navy have to take a break from their mission?
And I’m not even going to go into the humiliation of it happening on Navy Day, the same day in which a Navy flagship (the Neukrotimy) nearly sank after blowing itself up in a fireworks display, and two other ships blundered into bridges in St Petersburg. Oh no. I would never be so cruel as to do that…
