Russia to buy two British Scorpio mini-subs

Posted on 09 August 2005 by Andy

Mosnews reports that the Russian Navy has decided to purchase two of the British Scorpio mini-submarines that proved so effective in rescuing the Priz mini-submarine this weekend.  Commander of the Pacific Fleet, Admiral Viktor Fedorov confirmed that:

“As well as the Scorpio vessels, the minister has decided to buy all the equipment needed for them, as they are not compatible with Russian equipment.”

Presumably they’ve decided to buy two so that they can have one each for their Baltic and Pacific fleets, preventing the need to transport the subs from one end of Russia to the other in time of emergency.

What next?

Probably they decided to buy 2 so they can use one for spares when the other one goes wrong. I don’t suppose they will do any maintenance on them so they will go wrong pretty soon.
