Well, if Konstantin’s source is to be believed, many in the Russian medical profession think that HIV and AIDS aren’t linked.

That’s the main reason why Russian government itself spends kopecks on anti-AIDS projects but accepts international grants eagerly.” I was struck dumb from astonishment. “But why didn’t they say out load?” Now he smiled indulgently at my naivet?. “Can you imagine how many people became rich and famous fighting AIDS?”
Konstantin goes on to draw a parallel with the Year 2000 crisis (remember that?), where a few companies got very very rich by hyping up a nonexistent problem.
For me - who, admittedly, has no scientific proof either way as to whether HIV and AIDS are linked - the most depressing thing about this story is the way in which Russians once again are taking the easy way out, and falling back on the conspiracy theory. "They’re all out to get us." They, of course, are America and the capitalist system who, despite the end of the Cold War are still bent on Russia’s destruction.
It’s all rubbish of course. Link between HIV and AIDS or no link, the reason the Russian government "spends kopecks on anti-AIDS projects but accepts international grants eagerly" is that it can. The Russian people, intentionally or not, remain remarkably ignorant about the threat that HIV/AIDS could pose to them, to their families. And, because they don’t know how much of a threat it is, they don’t demand that they government take notice of the issue. And, as long as that remains the case, the government - or, more specifically, a few people within the government, will make a killing.

My medical educaiton and experience tells me that of course HIV causes AIDS. First - why people treated with HAART get better
Second - why healthy gay man who get’s diagnosed with HIV in my clinic after having sex with a man who few years later dies of AIDS, now only few years later having his immune system slowly disintegrating.
Third - do we have better explanation
Forth - can someone explain the fact that HIV virus is really mutated SIV that has been present in monkeys for thousands of years and only now it infected human. And SIV causes Monkey AIDS - of course than you need to take a position that it does not cause AIDS in Monkey as well.
Fifth - how come barrier contraceptives work
Anyway, of course I can have longer list of numbers here.
Now my humility makes be say, what if people on this site are right? What if entire medical establishment is wrong? Hell, that happened before and many times.
So, can someone post some decent links or info to alternative causes of AIDS. And please don’t tell me that AIDS does not exist. I have treated hundreds of AIDS patients and I will have very hard time believing you if you do.

One more thing
If you do come up with alternative explanation to AIDS please provide alternative treatment as well. Because otherwise it is of no value, since if you can’t treat condition and people will be dying, as a doctor I have to stick to the current methods that work at least somewhat, despite the fact that it feeds into large, and very greedy bigPharma, that cares only about profits.
I have been treating AIDS patients with immuno enhancing agents, and other CAM modalities to support immune system. People do get better, true, but if you take an AIDS patient, who is very sick, almost dying most of them do die if you do not start treating them with HAART. At this end point all the vitamins and immune enhensors usually don’t work (I have not seen it work) Having said that I do agree that strengthening immune system is of paramount value, especially early in course of the disease.

To address some of your questions. I don’t believe people are saying AIDS isn’t real, however, there is a theory out there that HIV may not lead to AIDS, and that AIDS is really just a renaming of old symptoms.
One theory is that many homosexuals started getting AIDS in the 80s by repeatedly subjecting their systems to STDs such as gonorrhea and syphilis while on a perpetual regiment of penicillin. This trashed their immune system, leading to it’s breakdown and what we now call AIDS.
If you’d like to know more, I’d recommend the book and its reviews.
