Welcome to the new look siberianlight.net

by Andy on September 25, 2005

After month upon month of dithering, I’ve finally taken the plunge into the murky depths known as Wordpress. And, after several days of toiling over the unfamiliar Wordpress engine (not to mention some pretty colourful language) here we are, on a whole new server, with a whole new design (based on a template by Beccary).

The design is still a little rough-and-ready, and will probably evolve over the next few weeks. In particular, the current grey/green colour scheme should give way to the familiar old light blue scheme sometime soon (as soon as I can figure out how to do it right). The old RSS feeds don’t work at the moment, and implementing them is a pretty high priority, too. Any comments on the design, bug reports, etc, are extremely welcome, as are any suggestions of what you’d like to see on the site in the future.

Talking of the future, the next couple of months should be an exciting time for siberianlight.net, as a number of new authors begin to make their debuts. Tim Newman has already taken his bow, and keep your eyes peeled for others bringing a much needed expertise and insight into subjects as wide-ranging as Ukraine, Russian regions, and the role of NGOs in Russia today.

And now, back to our normal programming…

You should have a note somewhere that you have a new address. It took me a while to figure out why the link to your site from my blogroll no longer worked. I have it fixed now. But, I may not be the only person to have experienced such transition problems.

Thanks Otto, and sorry for any confusion. Anyone coming to the http://www.siberianlight.net address should be automatically re-directed here, and I’ve left a note on the old typepad site, pointing them to the new address. Fortunately, most people were using http://www.siberianlight.net anyway, so there shouldn’t be too much confusion there.

The major problem, which I’m still struggling with, is the RSS feeds. They were located in a specific location on the typepad server (www.siberianlight.net/siberianlight/FILENAME), and I haven’t got the faintest idea how to set up new RSS feeds with wordpress, give it the same name as the prevous feed, and put it in the right place. So, I’m resigned to losing a few readers in the short term… unless anyone out there knows the answer to my query?

Does your host use cPanel? I think I might be able to walk you through a redirect.

I had your old RSS feed as: http://www.siberianlight.net/siberianlight/index.rdf

Basically, you want to set up requests for /siberianlight/index.rdf to go to your RSS feed. Safari and Bloglines are autodiscovering your default Wordpress feeds, so you might want a few temporary redirects.

Now, as with all my advice, I don’t know exactly what I’m doing, and I had a hard time getting my redirect to feedburner working (because you want readers but not feedburner to get redirected).

But, just to let you know how I’ve got it working, I have feedburner pointing here: http://www.registan.net/?feed=rss2 and I have a redirect setup from /wp-rss2.php to my feedburner feed. I don’t know how I figured that out. Probably saw something on a wordpress site and noticed that readers actually subscribe to the wp-rss2 or something. (But damn, none of this makes sense to me right now. Trust me, my feedburner stats shot way up when I did it.)

So, in short, you want to set up some redirects. You might also want to search the wordpress and feedburner help forums.
