Gotcha!

Following the frustration and embarrasment of last week’s chase on the high seas, when a Russian trawler managed to outrace the Norwegian coastguard back to the safety of Russian waters, the Norwegians seem to be taking a really hard line - they arrested two fishing boats today:

The Norwegian coastguard on Monday arrested two Russian fishing boats over charges of violating Norwegian territorial waters, the RIA-Novosti news agency reports.

The agency quoted a source in the Union of Northern Fisheries as saying that, the two ships, belonging to the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk fishing companies were detained on the grounds of a violation of the 12-mile zone around Bear Island which is a Norwegian territory.

Better hope there aren’t any Norwegian trawlers floating around in Russian waters - in the current climate, I don’t think I’d want to bet on them making it home without first visiting some Russian law enforcement officers…
