by Andy on February 14, 2007

No really. That was the headline from a news report I just read.  Krasnoyarsk has just won an award for having the third best custom house in Siberia.

Altai customsKrasnoyarsk custom house was listed third best in Siberia in the category “Best custom house team of the first category” for 2006. The first and the second in this category are Altai and Omsk custom houses. Irkutsk custom house was declared “Best internal customs station”. The contest for the best custom house teams was conducted by Siberian Custom House, Krasnoyarsk custom-house reported.

“Krasnoyarsk Airport” became winner in “Best custom house team in non-traffic” category.

The winners were chosen, according to such criteria as collection of customs duties, competence level, interaction of officials with foreign trade participants, discipline, sport and cultural work. A total of 19 custom houses participate in the contest.

I couldn’t find a copy of the Krasnoyarsk customs house to illustrate this article, so you’ll have to make do with one of Gorno Altai instead.

I noticed two other items of interest at that source:

Krasnoyarsk Territory lawmakers set maximum tax rate for gambling business

The Legislative Assembly have set a maximum tax rate for gambling business February 14. The deputies made changes in the law “On tax rates in gambling” at the session Wednesday. A tax rate for one gambling table will be $4,800, and for one slot-machine - $280. The amendment will help to increase regional budget income, as Svetlana Simonova, a deputy-head of the Krasnoyarsk Territory economy development and planning department, said. The changes were approved of unanimously.

Gambling banned in Krasnoyarsk Territory from July 1, 2007

The Krasnoyarsk Territory Legislative Assembly has passed the bill “About the ban on gambling business in the region” February 14. 29 votes of 31 were for. The voting was roll-call, and the bill was passed in the second reading. The bill suggests imposing a ban on gambling in the Krasnoyarsk Territory from July 1, 2007 and canceling the October 27, 2005 law “On gambling business in the region”. The deputies said they had received letters of appeal from the Krasnoyarsk Territory Gambling Business Association, the National Bookmakers’ Association, the Krasnoyarsk Territory Union of Industrialists and Businessmen. The appeals were advocating gambling business.

I can’t imagine where people get the idea that Russia is hopelessly confused.
