Russia’s Eurovision entry - it’s dull and it’s sung in English!

by Andy on April 2, 2007

Update: If you are interested in Russian eurovision songs, check out my post with videos of every Russian eurovision entry since 1994.

Russia will be represented at the 2007 Eurovision song contest by Serebro, a three girl band.

Serebro have taken the controversial decision to sing in English, rather than Russian. While I imagine this will help with wider European recognition, I can’t imagine it’ll go down well at home. Russia has a very strong domestic music industry, and this seems like a bit of a sell out to me.

Anyway, courtesy of Youtube, check out Song#1, by Serebro, Russia’s official entry for Eurovision 2007.

Personally, I think it’s a bit dull - not just the choice of group, but the song too. Far less interesting that Ukraine’s ballsy decision to pick a transvestite as their representative at Eurovision 2007.

Russia’s domestic industry is surprisingly strong, but unfortunately seems to have gone downhill in recent years by following the US/UK route of mass commercialisation featuring adolescents. A lot of what is played now is garbage.

Still, it’s no less garbage (indeed, probably less so) than what’s on offer in the UK, and occasionally a band pops up with a few good hits - Gorod 312 (originally from Bishkek) come to mind.

I guess today’s generation of Russians think it’s all pretty good, but the perestroika generation, to which my wife belongs, hark back to the days of Victor Tsoi and Kino, Nautilus Pompilius, and DDT, when Russian music was as meaningful as anything we produced in the west at the time.

It’s hardly controversial Russia singing in English. Since the free language rule was introduced at Eurovision they’ve only had one entry in Russian (Tatu in 2003), and that, allegedly, was only because they didn’t have time to produce an English one before the deadline for submission of entries.

Incidentally, Andrei Danilko is a cross-dressing actor, not a transvestite ;-)

Tatu was cool. Since I don’t understand Russian very well, Tatu in Russian is even better…;)

I happen to think Russia’s is the best song by a country mile in this year’s Eurovision!

Although I can totally understand the comments about them singing in English.

BOLLOX - TO THE NAY SAYERS

russian entry is a class act - sexy, catchy and just a bit edgy. Ukrainian cross-dressers is a dated cliche, Israeli’s did it earlier and better. Let’s get back to some music quality (?) rather than sad novelty acts.

The best song in the contest…should have won…sexy catchy and contmporary. When will it be released in UK?
