Finally adopting the adventurous brand of football that they should have been playing all along, Russia managed to not only win their final group game against Greece 2-1, but to break a tournament record in the process.
Dmitri Kirichenko’s goal after just 68 seconds was the fastest in tournament history, and a second followed soon after from the head of Dmitri Bulykin. Despite a goal late in the first half, Greece were outplayed throughout the game by a Russian side playing with the intent and purpose that they lacked in their defeats to Portugal and Spain. The result rarely looked in doubt.
And to add to Russia’s glorious victory – I’m thrilled to report that a side-bet with a Greek friend netted me a bottle of very fine Greek wine.
