Two new Russia Blogs

by Andy on March 6, 2009

I’ve just been introduced to two new blogs about Russia, and thought I’d pass on their details to you.

The Parallax Brief

The Parallax Brief promises “unrepentant Subjectivity on Economics, Politics, Defence, Foreign Policy, and Russia”.  And, from what I can see, it delivers that subjectivity with style.

Parallax Brief Russia Blog

Andrew (good name, by the way, although I recommend replacing the “rew” with “y” to make it even better) the author of The Parallax Brief, is an English expat working in a Moscow-based investment bank.  And, as you might expect, there are a fair few posts covering the Russian economy.

But it’s not just economics and foreign policy.  There are plenty of slice of life posts - for example, the wince-worthy tales of Mrs Parallax Brief’s trips to both a Moscow hospital and a Moscow Dentist.

My favourite post so far, though, is Andrew’s attempt to develop an equation demonstrating that refusing to spread salt on the icy streets of Moscow just to protect the Muscovites’ shoes is, well, kind of expensive in the longer term.

Crisis Crunch

Also worth checking out is Crisis Crunch, a new blog dedicated to covering the current crisis (financial mostly) in Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

Crisis Crunch Blog - Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan

Run by PBN – who are apparently “the preeminent strategic communications firm specializing Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan” – Crisis Crunch regularly publishes useful statistics and analysis of how the crisis is being communicated in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

It’s not an area I know much about, but so far they’ve published a bucketload of statistics, and a few interesting looking pieces of analysis.  I particularly liked this post about how Moscow’s restaurants are responding to the credit crisis.

I’ve got to say, these newer blogs are certainly getting much slicker.

Thanks, Andy. That’s a kind write up — and it certainly caused a surge of visits to the blog. I wish I could offer the same in return, but I’m afriad that Siberian Light will already be a household name among my eight regular readers.

Thanks again.
